CYO Sports

CYO Sports

CYO programs seek to help young men and women appreciate Christ’s presence in their opponents, use their physical gifts and play fairly and enthusiastically, both on and off the field. Through programs and training linked to parish life, CYO offers young people, coaches and their families another opportunity to work together in communion, showing the world a new vision of “competition” in sports.

Why Join Tack and Field?

Track and Field is an excellent way to build overall fitness. Students participate in track for many reasons: some want to gain to gain an edge in other sports by improving speed and endurance; some may want to achive a personal goal; and, others may want to stay fit with friends. Coaches will ensure each athlete performs to the best of his or her ability in a fun, encouraging environment. We will focus on building endurance, enhancing speed, proper running form, and good sportsmanship.

What to Expect

The St. Mary track and field program is created to be developmentally appropriate for young athletes. Practices will begin with a warm-up and dynamic drills (moving stretches such as high knees, skips, bounds), followed by a workout (ranging from core work to repeats and ladders) and a conditioning game (capture the flag, relay games, sharks and minnows). We end practice with static stretching and a discussion of the day’s training with the coaches. Each practice will build on the other so we encourage athletes to come to as many practices as possible. However, we understand that children participate in other sports and can accommodate busy schedules.

What to Bring to Practice

All students should wear a good pair of running shoes with laces double tied. St. Mary students interested in purchasing a good pair of running shoes can recieve a 15% discount at Pacers Running Store by mentioning St. Mary Track and Field. We supply water but find it can be depleted quickly so we encourage students to bring a bottle of water. All students are to leave their cell phones and other electronic devices in their backpacks – they do not belong on the track.

Parent Volunteers

If you ran Track or are interested in coaching, please step forward! We are in need of parents to assist with walking the kids over to Jones Point Park on Wednesday afternoons. We also are in need of volunteers for the Spring Track Meet. All volunteers need to be Virtus trained. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Coach Torres.

Inclement Weather:

In the event of bad weather, we will cancel practice by noon and send an email. Please feel free to check in with the coaches if you have questions. Practice will occur if there is light rain.

For permission to leave on Wednesdays after school with the coaches, please update Pick-Up Patrol with the option After School Activity, and list Track. If your child is not listed EVERY Wednesday (8/26-9/26) as going to Track, the school will not release them to the coaches. They will be sent to Extended Day where they will incur charges. Please do this now!

Register through Sports Pilot and fill out the online registration and pay through Faith Direct. T shirts are ordered through Custom Ink. Please email Coach Torres with questions.
