Senior Services of Alexandria

Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) is a non-profit organization that has as its mission, “to foster independence and self-sufficiency, enabling seniors within the City of Alexandria to age with dignity.” SSA operates the Groceries to Go, Meals on Wheels delivery program and DOT transportation reservations for the City, presents educational programs through various events, a speaker series, and a monthly cable television production, Senior Living in Alexandria. SSA and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria operate the AniMeals on Wheels program, providing food for pets of low-income seniors. SSA’s Friendly Visitor Program matches volunteers with seniors for weekly visits, enhancing connections to the community, and SSA’s Silver Service Card program provides local seniors with discounts at select stores and restaurants.

Meals on Wheels

A life-sustaining program that allows seniors who are unable to leave their homes to shop, or who have difficulty preparing a meal, to have two healthy meals a day delivered to their homes. Meals are delivered 365 days a year, including holidays. To find out if you are eligible to receive subsidized meals through the Division of Aging and Adult Services, call 703-746-5999. Don’t qualify? SSA offers a direct-pay Meals on Wheels program at only $12 a day. Both programs serve the same food. A minimum of three days a week is required.

Groceries to Go

In partnership with Harris Teeter, Giant Foods and Safeway, screened volunteers deliver groceries year-round to seniors every other Thursday. Groceries are ordered over the phone based on the grocery recipient’s personal shopping list. There is no minimum order required and no delivery fee. Volunteers deliver groceries between  10 a.m. and noon to the client’s home, and, if requested, will put the groceries away.

Friendly Visitor Program

Carefully screened and trained volunteers are individually matched with socially isolated seniors with  whom they visit for at least an hour each week  year-round. All seniors are also interviewed  regarding their personal history and interests, to facilitate a compatible match. The program enhances the quality of life of seniors in the City of Alexandria by providing social interaction, mental stimulation, and emotional support.

Transportation Program

This program provides transportation for disabled residents of Alexandria who find it difficult to use public transportation. DOT’s one-way fare for trips up to five miles outside City limits is $4.00. Trips over five miles outside the City are $6.00.

AniMeals on Wheels

SSA and the Alexandria Animal Welfare League have teamed up to form a monthly pet food delivery program for low-income seniors and their pets. These deliveries occur on the second Thursday of each month. Participants have the option of being delivered 10 cans of wet food or 10 lbs. of dry food.

SSA, the City of Alexandria, and At Home in Alexandria co-sponsor a program to connect seniors with local businesses. The Silver Service Card, when presented at participating locations, offers discounts to Alexandria seniors.

Information and Education

SSA presents a monthly Speaker Series event, each with a different topic, providing the most up-to-date information. The programs are collaboratively created in partnership with City agencies and non-profits. SSA also produces a monthly cable TV show, Senior Living in Alexandria, which highlights information shared at the Speaker Series. The show is broadcast on Comcast cable channel 70 Sundays at 2 pm in Alexandria, and on channel 69 in Arlington. SSA offers a FREE 4-week Senior Academy designed to provide Alexandria’s seniors with an opportunity to gain exposure to the City’s various government functions, learn about other organizations for seniors, and help seniors get involved!
