2022 Lenten Liturgical and Events Schedule

LENTEN GUIDELINES

Catholics are required to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and every Friday during Lent, and fast on both Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Abstaining from meat is not required on March 25, 2022, as it is the Feast Day of the Annunciation of the Lord; the Church permits meat to be eaten on feast days.

Masses:

Basilica Church: Daily Masses: Monday-Friday, at 6:30 a.m., 8 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. Saturdays at 8:30 a.m.

Basilica Church: Saturday: 5 p.m. Vigil Mass / Sunday: 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 5 p.m.

Eucharistic Adoration

Basilica Church: Wednesdays, after the 12:10 p.m. Mass until 8:30 p.m., including the Saint Katharine Drexel Society Holy Hour from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

First Fridays Nocturnal Adoration: Friday from 9 p.m. til Saturday at 8:20 a.m. Lenten Suppers: Hosted by Basilica Apostolates

Lyceum Auditorium: from 6-7 p.m. Meatless meals served on the following Fridays: March  4; March 11; March 18; March 25 (will include meat);  April 1; and April 8. Free-will donations to support the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

Stations of the Cross

Basilica Church: 7 p.m. on the following Fridays: March 4, 11, 18 & 25 and April 1, 8 and 15.

Basilica Church: Mondays through Fridays after the 12:10 p.m. Mass. Fridays at 7:30 p.m., after Stations of the Cross. Saturdays from 9-10 a.m. and 4-5 p.m.

Ash Wednesday Masses – March 2

Basilica Church: 6:30 a.m., 8 a.m., 12:10 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. (Choir) NOTE: No Confessions from 7:30-8:30 p.m. and no Saint Katharine Drexel Society Holy Hour, from 7:30-8:30 p.m., on Ash Wednesday. 

Bishop’s Lenten Appeal – March 5-6

Basilica Church: Follow-up weekend at all the Masses for the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal, which is the primary means of support for the many diocesan-wide ministries, programs, services and good works of our faith community. Support of the appeal helps the less fortunate among us, provides spiritual and physical comfort and counsel to those in crisis, and inspires children, young adults and families to embrace and nurture their Catholic faith.

Saint Lucy Food Project – March 5-6 and March 12-13

Basilica Church: Knights of Columbus to hand out Saint Lucy food bags after the Sunday Masses on March 5-6; the Knights collect food bags after the Sunday Masses of March 12-13. Click here for more information.

Theology on Tap – March 7
Murphy’s Grand Irish Pub: All young adults (21-39) are invited to listen to Father John Riley, who will be giving a talk on “Jesus Christ’s Relentless Mercy.” Come early for food and drinks at 6:30 p.m. The talk begins at 7:30 p.m. and ends with Q&A. Click here for more information.

Treasures of the Church: Sacred Relics of the Saints – Tuesday, March 8

Basilica Church: Presentation by Father Carlos Martins in the church starting at 6:30 p.m. Following his 75-minute presentation, head to the Lyceum Auditorium (313 Duke Street) to venerate more than 150 relics in the Lyceum Auditorium. Click here for more information.

Book Club – Starting, Wednesday, March 9

Lyceum Auditorium: Dr. Chad Pecknold will lead “A Lenten Journey Through Saint Augustine’s Confessions” book club for five consecutive Wednesdays, ending on April 6, from 6-7:30 p.m. Registration fee: $25. Click here for more information and to register.

Morning of Reflection – Saturday, March 12

Lyceum Auditorium: Sister Angela de Fatima Coelho will reflect on the Eucharistic message of Our Lady of Fatima. You’re invited to 8:30 a.m. Mass in the church, followed by the Rosary from 9-9:30. Then go to the Lyceum for socializing from 9:30-10 a.m. Sister Angela’s talk begins at 10 a.m. Click here for more information.

Saint Patrick Annual Irish Hooley – Sunday, March 13

The Basilica School of Saint Mary Gym: All are invited to the annual Irish Hooley from 2-4 p.m. Tickets: $5 for children; $25 for adults. All proceeds go to benefit Christ House. Join us for a lively afternoon as we honor and celebrate Irish heritage with food, music, singing and dancing. Click here for more information and to purchase tickets.

Synod Listening Session – Tuesday, March 15

Lyceum Auditorium: A listening session, from 7-8:30 p.m., where attendees can share their comments on the state of the Church and on how the Church is journeying together and fulfilling her mission in the world. Click here for more information.

Saint Joseph’s Altar – Saturday, March 19

Lyceum Auditorium: Bring baked goods and food to adorn Saint Joseph’s altar on his feast day. Please also bring canned goods, which will be donated to the poor. Drop off food after the 8:30 a.m. Mass; celebration will begin after the 5 p.m. Vigil Mass. Click here to sign up to bring food and other items for the altar. Holy Hour and Solemn Vespers – Thursday, March 24, the Vigil of the Annunciation of the Lord

Basilica Church: Join the Serra Club of Arlington, from 7-8 p.m., to pray for vocations.

“Tolton: From Slave to Priest” play – Monday, March 28

Lyceum Auditorium: “Tolton: From Slave to Priest,” produced by Saint Luke Productions, tells the incredible true story of Venerable Augustus Tolton’s journey from slave to priest. Starting time: 7 p.m. Tickets: $10. Click here for more information and to get tickets.

Young Adult Lenten Retreat – April 1-April 3
