“From the Archives” Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest, among the most popular social events in Saint Mary parish, was begun by Father Dennis Kleinmann in 2001. He envisioned this fun, parish-wide gathering as a way to reflect two aspects rather important in his life. In his own words, “My German heritage and my Wisconsin connection are at the root of this celebration. More importantly, it is a way of bringing the parish together in a setting that is relaxed, hopefully inexpensive, and just plain fun.” It was never intended to be a fundraiser, but solely an opportunity to gather as a parish family on a fall afternoon.

Held at the Basilica of Saint Mary School gymnasium and playground, usually on the last Sunday in October, the festivities have included a German band and plenty of “oompa” music. The Mount Vernon Community Band, complete with lederhosen and Alpine hats, provided the music for a number of years. Tables were filled with a bountiful feast of German foods – bratwurst, a roasted pig, German potato salad, sauerkraut, desserts and, of course, German beer and root beer. Outdoor games have entertained the children.

God must have been listening to the prayers of our parishioners because, over the years, the weather has been very good for Oktoberfest. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy worked its devastating way up the Atlantic coast, threatening to pass through Alexandria on Sunday, October 28. Fortunately, the hurricane missed Alexandria and Oktoberfest went on as usual.

Father Kleinmann was right – Oktoberfest proved popular with parishioners of all ages. Of course, parishioners who remember him know that Father Kleinmann was happiest in those years when neither his Green Bay Packers nor our Washington Redskins were playing on the last Sunday afternoon in October. That way, there was little competition for the German music, food and fun!

The celebration of Oktoberfest has been a part of our parish landscape for nearly two decades, until 2020 when it was sidelined by COVID-19. God willing, Saint Mary’s Oktoberfest will return in 2021!
