“From the Archives” — Prelates in Alexandria

A century ago, there was no TV, no internet, and people could not just hop on a plane and visit Rome and the Vatican. When someone famous or important visited Alexandria and Saint Mary parish, it was an exciting event. The Alexandria Gazette published an account of such an event in 1912:

On October 12, 1912, the Apostolic Delegate to the United States, Bishop Giovanni Bonzano, and Richmond Bishop Denis J. O’Connell visited the children of Saint Mary’s Parochial School and Saint Mary’s Academy on their way to Mount Vernon. It was Columbus Day and the Italian Bishop was going to honor the Catholic Italian explorer, and show the Vatican’s respect for American independence and the patriotism of America Catholics by placing a wreath on George Washington’s tomb.

Wearing white and gold, the papal colors, the children greeted the prelates in the Lyceum, where a reception was held. The festive occasion included a musical program and a solo by Miss Kathryn Brill. Miss Virginia Downey gave the welcome address. After addressing the people at the Lyceum, the prelates had an automobile tour of Alexandria, including a very diplomatic visit to Christ Church, where the Apostolic Delegate sat in George Washington’s pew, followed by an elaborate hotel banquet.

The visit to Alexandria closed with another program at the Lyceum, with a number of speakers addressing Virginia’s role in U. S. history, Christopher Columbus and George Washington. Thomas E. Dyson, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, acted as master of ceremonies. More singing and music accompanied the speakers.

It was certainly a busy day for the two bishops! Bishop Bonzano (1867-1927) was later named a Cardinal by Pope Pius XI on December 11, 1922. Bishop O’Connell (1849-1927) served as Bishop of the Diocese of Richmond (which then included Saint Mary parish) from 1912-1926.
