Format for the Simple Ceremony

This form is to be completed by all couples who intend to have a simple wedding ceremony.

Format for the Simple Ceremony

Practically speaking, a simple ceremony is less elaborate and more subdued in tone and appearance than the usual wedding ceremony. It could take place in the priest’s office but the couple may request that it be celebrated in the church. Here are the specific guidelines:

• Form of the Ritual: The ceremony is conducted with or without a Nuptial Mass.

• Guests: A limited number of guests may be invited.

• Wedding Party: The wedding party will consist of only the best man and the maid/matron of honor. No others (groomsmen, bridesmaids, flower girls, ring bearer, etc.) are permitted.

• Wedding Apparel: Appropriate dress for a simple ceremony is semi-formal, i.e., a suit for the groom and a modest evening dress for the bride.

• Procession: There is no procession. The couple takes their places in the front of the church before the ceremony begins without any formality.

• Decoration: Only limited, subdued decorations will be allowed. For example, a few simple flower arrangements are appropriate (especially a bride’s bouquet and others which may be left in the church as a gift to God), while a “runner” would not be appropriate.

• Music: Music is permitted along the same guidelines that apply for all liturgies during Lent: as assistance to congregational singing. While there is no procession, there may be an opening and closing hymn. There would be no prelude, no postlude, and no other instrumental solos.

• Readings: The couple selects the readings according to No. 34 above.

• Devotion to Mary: The couple may make a customary devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

• Pictures: Pictures are permitted along the same guidelines that apply for other weddings at the Basilica of St. Mary.

This is the policy of the priests of this parish. This policy is consistent with the instructions of the Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington.
