At its legislative meeting on March 8, the Alexandria City Council will consider a proposed proclamation to designate March 10, 2022 as “Abortion Provider Appreciation Day.” Click here to read the language of proposed proclamation.

[Here is an excerpt from the proposed proclamation: “March 10 has since been established to show appreciation for the high-quality care that family planning clinics and their staff provide, and to celebrate their courage, compassion, and dedication to their work of protecting women’s reproductive rights; and to affirm that these services must be accessible for people to make real decisions about their bodies, lives, and futures…”]

Use this form to contact the city council now and express your strong opposition to this proclamation. Some suggested talking points are:

+ I strongly urge you to reject the proposed “Abortion Provider Appreciation Day” Proclamation.

+ I oppose violence of every kind.

+ Expressing appreciation for abortion providers is fundamentally contrary to my values.  Abortion is a direct attack on life itself.  As an Alexandria resident, I am deeply offended by the proposed designation of an “appreciation day” for those who destroy lives.

+ Abortion providers perform violent acts against the unborn.  It is wrong for the City of Alexandria to celebrate what they do.

+ The City should instead express appreciation for those who save lives and re-direct its focus toward recognizing and supporting both mothers and their children.

If you use the last point, please consider including, if possible, your own examples of organizations that support both mothers and their children in the local community.

Please take a strong stand for life as a resident of Alexandria!

Here is what Bishop Michael Burbidge said in a statement:

On March 8, the Alexandria City Council will consider a proposed proclamation to designate March 10, 2022, as “Abortion Provider Appreciation Day.” The proclamation calls on Alexandria residents to “celebrate the courage, compassion, and the high-quality care that abortion providers and clinic staff provide.”

Violence of every kind must be condemned-and abortion is a direct, violent attack on human life. Proposing a celebration of abortion and an “appreciation day” for those who destroy lives defies comprehension. The City of Alexandria should instead do the opposite. It should celebrate all those who save, protect and care for human life. It should re-direct its focus toward recognizing and supporting both mothers and their children, as so many dedicated and compassionate people in Alexandria do each day.

I urge Alexandria residents to express their opposition to this proclamation, and I continue to call upon all in our diocese to proclaim the Gospel of Life by word and example.
