Why Join Track and Field?

Track and Field is an excellent way to build overall fitness. Students participate in track for many reasons: some want to gain an edge in other sports by improving speed and endurance; some may want to achieve a personal goal; and, others may want to stay fit with friends. Coaches will ensure each athlete performs to the best of his or her ability in a fun, encouraging environment. We will focus on building endurance, enhancing speed, proper form (running, throwing, jumping) and good sportsmanship.

What to Expect?

The Basilica of Saint Mary’s CYO track and field program is created to be developmentally appropriate for young athletes. Practices will begin with a warm-up and dynamic drills (moving stretches such as high knees, skips and bounds), followed by a workout (ranging from core work to repeats and ladders) and a conditioning game (capture the flag, relay games or sharks and minnows). We will end each practice with static stretching and a discussion of the day’s training with the coaches. Each practice will build on the other, so we encourage athletes to come to as many practices as possible. However, we understand that children participate in other sports and can accommodate busy schedules.
