Father Moses Tamale to Assist at the Basilica during the Month of August 2023

(NOTE: Father Moses will be with us here at the Basilica of Saint Mary during the month of August 2023.)

Dear Parishioners,

My name is Father Moses Tamale. I was born and raised in Uganda. I am from a family of five children and have two sisters and two brothers. I am the third. I joined seminary after high school. For six-and-a-half years, I was in the seminary in Uganda, after which my bishop asked me to join the seminary in the Archdiocese of Sydney, Australia. On December 8, 2017, I was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Kampala, Uganda. One year later, I was asked to serve in the Sydney Archdiocese. The Catholic Church in Uganda is greatly inspired by the Holy Martyrs of Uganda, whose feast we celebrate on June 3.

Coming to America is not only a time for me to get away for a while, but also an opportunity for me to have some experience of the Church in this country and more so in the DC area. I am looking forward to meeting many people at the Basilica, which – according to the little I have read – is a vibrant parish. I hope I will also have an opportunity to explore the DC area. I enjoy playing tennis and volleyball. Being away from home has taught me to adjust to all sorts of cuisines. I particularly enjoy fish, lamb and beef. I have recently developed interest in fishing (I guess to work on my patience as well).

I’ve also just started reading the journals of the late George Cardinal Pell, who touched many people in Australia through his life in prison, which was a moment of trial for the Church. He blessed us with three volumes of his experience in jail, and I find them very inspiring.

I am looking forward to having a fruitful stay with you all. May the Holy Martyrs of Uganda intercede for us.

Blessings,

Father Moses
