In wake of tragedy, Eucharistic Procession provides consolation

Hundreds of lay faithful from St. Mary’s Parish and the surrounding area joined Bishop Michael Burbidge and Fr. Edward Hathaway for Mass and a procession on the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The procession took place several days after several leaders from Congress, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, were badly injured. The procession started directly following Mass, and headed down South Royal St to St. Mary’s Cemetery. Bishop Burbidge led the faithful as he carried the monstrance down the busy streets of Old Town. During Mass, he said that, “The order of a Eucharistic procession is as follows: Jesus leads and we follow. How we’ve forgotten that!” Wise words that encouraged everyone to encounter the Lord in a more profound way during the solemn procession. After the procession, refreshments were served on the newly renovated Fr. Rankin Courtyard. Bishop spent time talking with parishioners and wishing all fathers a very happy Father’s Day!
