Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Reception of Basilica Symbols with Bishop Burbidge

All are invited to join Bishop Michael F. Burbidge on September 8th at 10:00 am as we formally celebrate the designation of our parish as a basilica and receive the objects particular to a basilica, the Ombrellino (umbrella) and Tintinnabulum (bell).

The Ombrellino and Tintinnabulum are displayed in basilicas worldwide to show a basilica’s special relationship with the Holy Father. You can read more about these here.

“This is the liturgical celebration of our designation as a basilica by Pope Francis,” says Basilica Rector Fr. Edward Hathaway. “While we did have a Mass with Bishop Burbidge announcing our basilica status on January 12, this is the day which we will be receiving the symbols of a basilica.”

During Mass, the Basilica will additionally receive relics that are centered around Mary.

“Those will later be reserved in a side-chapel that we will have constructed in the near future,” says Fr. Hathaway.

September 8th is also the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is an important feast day for the Basilica since Mary is the patron of our parish. Those who attend may obtain a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions. The conditions are listed here.

“It’s a great joy for me to be the Rector of the Basilica of Saint Mary and to host the Bishop for this celebration,” says Fr. Hathaway. “It’s a sign of honor not only for the many generations of parishioners here, but it’s also a great honor for the Diocese of Arlington. It is a recognition from the Holy Father that we are one of the principal places of worship in the nation and the world. For that, I am very grateful and happy. I hope that many come as pilgrims to receive the graces the Church will offer on this day. Now, more than ever, the faithful are encouraged to visit our parish to discover the beauty of the Lord and His love for His sons and daughters.”

After Mass, a reception with Bishop Burbidge will take place in the Basilica’s Lyceum.

Please note: There will be no 8:30 am Mass or morning confessions on September 8th due to this celebration.
