A Daily Retreat that Travels with You

For those who cannot attend daily Mass but want to stay connected with the readings and the feasts of the liturgical year, I recommend three resources that are readily available and would be a good investment for Catholics on the go who want to grow closer to Christ. They can be used when alone for quiet prayer or shared at the family dinner table, or used anytime and wherever you happen to be in our busy modern age.

First, the “Magnificat “ monthly magazine. It has all the readings and prayers for daily Mass, with a daily meditation as well as daily morning and evening prayers, poems, and an essay on art. The size of a Readers Digest, it runs about $64 for an annual subscription and is also available in a digital version for use on your personal device. You can learn more here.

Secondly, the 7-volume series “In Conversation with God”. It offers three meditations a day to guide your mental prayer and includes special volumes for feast days, the two major liturgical cycles: Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter, as well as the weeks of ordinary time. It is scripture based and practical. Small in size, it transports easily from home to office. It is available through Scepter Press and may be purchased one volume at a time, or as a complete set. You may also find them on Amazon, new or used.

With this year’s 100th Anniversary of the Fatima apparitions of Our Lady and the call to pray the daily rosary, there is a wonderful 2-Disc CD that can be played in the car on the way to school or work, while running errands, weekend road trips and at home when you want to pray with a guide. It includes a little music, a brief scripture passage to set the scene of each mystery and offers all four sets of mysteries: Joyful (Monday and Saturday), Luminous (Thursday), Sorrowful (Tuesday and Friday) and Glorious (Wednesday and Sunday). Also included is the Litany of Loretto at the end of each set of mysteries. It is available in various formats from Amazon.

Sincerely yours in the Heart of Jesus,

Fr. Edward Hathaway, Pastor
