Catholic Daughters honor area students at awards ceremony

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Kavanaugh #54 hosted their Education Contest Awards Ceremony and Reception on May 13 at the Basilica of Saint Mary.

Awards were presented to students from the Basilica School of Saint Mary, Blessed Sacrament School, Saint Rita School and Queen of Apostles School. The students competed in four categories: Poetry, Essay Writing, Art and Computer Art. The Division I competition included fourth and fifth graders, while Division II was for sixth, seventh and eighth graders.

Father Edward Hathaway, Rector of the Basilica of Saint Mary, presented the awards to the winners. 2019 Education Contest Award Winners

Art Division II:
First place – Margaret Tennant (Queen of Apostles School)
Second place – Helena Williams (Blessed Sacrament School)
Third place – Ella Campbell (Blessed Sacrament School) and Sarah McKenna (Blessed Sacrament School)

Computer Art Division I:
First place – Natalie Van Atta (Basilica School of Saint Mary)
Second place – Angela Doucette (Basilica School of Saint Mary)

Computer Art Division II:
First place – Laurel Crawford (Basilica School of Saint Mary)
Second place – Gwendolyn Caslow (Saint Rita School)
Third place – Nicole Zajac (Basilica School of Saint Mary)

Essay Division I:
First place – Maura Mahon (Basilica School of Saint Mary)
Second place – David de Costa (Queen of Apostles School)
Third place – Thomas Clapton (Basilica School of Saint Mary)

Essay Division II:
First place – Robert Rosado (Blessed Sacrament School)
Second place – Charlotte Hrobsky (Blessed Sacrament School) and Maeve O’Brien (Blessed Sacrament School)
Third place – Heather Schofield (Blessed Sacrament School) and Isabella Sequar (Saint Rita School)
Honorable mention – Vincent Brown (Blessed Sacrament School) and Grace Gibbons (Basilica School of Saint Mary)

Seven of the students who won awards in the local contest went on to win in the Virginia CDA contest.
