August at the Basilica

Saturday, August 1st – Communal First Saturday. Begins with a reflection on the Fifth Sorrowful Mystery of the Rosary by Father Nicholas Blank at 8:00 am. Followed by Mass at 8:30 am. A Rosary and Confessions will begin at 9:00 am. Learn more about our Communal First Saturdays here.

Monday, August 3rd – Theology on Tap at Murphy’s Grand Irish Pub in Old Town. All young adults (ages 21-39) are invited to attend. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Talk starts at 7:30 pm.

Tuesday, August 4th – Memorial of Saint John Vianney, Patron Saint of Parish Priests. Mass at 8:00 am and 12:10 pm.

Wednesday, August 5th – Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. One of the four major Basilicas in the Catholic Church, it was the first church in the West to honor Mary. Mass at 8:00 am and 12:10 pm. Eucharistic Adoration will begin at 12:40 pm. A Holy Hour will start at 7:30 pm.

Thursday, August 6th – Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Mass at 8:00 am and 12:10 pm.

Thursday, August 6th – Novena with Bishop Burbidge for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary begins. Click here for the novena prayers.

Friday, August 7th – Nocturnal Adoration will start at 9:00 pm. Concludes on Saturday morning at 8:00 am.

Saturday, August 8th – The Saint Katharine Drexel Society will pray their monthly Second Saturday Rosary after the 8:30 am Mass.

Wednesday, August 12th – Eucharistic Adoration will begin at 12:40 pm. A Holy Hour will start at 7:30 pm.

Friday, August 14th and Saturday, August 15th – The Napa Institute’s Virtual Summer Conference. Free admission for Basilica parishioners. Learn more here.

Friday, August 14th – Family Holy Half Hour at 3:00 pm in the Basilica.

Saturday, August 15th – The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mass at 8:30 am and 12:00 pm for the Holy Day.

Saturday, August 15th – Meeting of the Luminaries of Holy Mary. They will attend Mass at 8:30 am, pray a Rosary in the Basilica after, then meet for their monthly meeting at 9:30 am in the Saint Joseph Room of the Lyceum (313 Duke Street). Learn more about the group here.

Wednesday, August 19th – Eucharistic Adoration will begin at 12:40 pm. A Holy Hour will start at 7:30 pm.

Thursday, August 20th – The Basilica of Saint Mary will host relics of Padre Pio as part of the Saint Pio Foundation’s National Relic Tour. The relics will be available for individual veneration from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, except for when Mass is being celebrated. Father Jerome Fasano, Pastor of Saint John the Baptist Church in Front Royal, will celebrate the 12:10 pm Mass and then give a reflection on Padre Pio after Mass.

Saturday, August 22nd – Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mass at 8:30 am.

Wednesday, August 26th – Eucharistic Adoration will begin at 12:40 pm. A Holy Hour will start at 7:30 pm.

Saturday, August 29th – The Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist. Mass at 8:30 am.

Saturday, August 29th – First Holy Communion Mass at 10:00 am.

Sunday, August 30th – Fifth Sunday Rosary after the 5:00 pm Mass. Details to be announced.
